The scale this calculator uses

By default the calculator uses a common US plus/minus scale: 93–96% is an A (4.0), 90–92% an A− (3.7), 87–89% a B+ (3.3) and so on down to 65–66% for a D (1.0); below 65% is an F. A+ (97% and above) also counts as 4.0, as on most 4.0 scales. Schools vary: some start an A at 90%, some have no plus/minus grades, and some give A+ 4.3. Check your school's grading policy and edit the minimum percentages above if they differ.

How to calculate GPA from percentages

  1. Convert each class percentage to a letter grade with your school's scale.
  2. Convert each letter to grade points on the 4.0 scale.
  3. Multiply grade points by the class credits, add them up and divide by total credits.

Example: 94% (A, 4.0) in a 3-credit class and 81% (B−, 2.7) in a 4-credit class: (4.0 × 3 + 2.7 × 4) ÷ 7 = 22.8 ÷ 7 = 3.26.

Why not just average the percentages?

GPA is built from letter grades, not raw percentages. Two classes at 89% and 90% are only one percent apart but land on different letters (B+ and A−), and a 99% earns no more points than a 94% on most 4.0 scales. That is why converting each class first and then averaging gives a different answer from averaging the percentages.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a percentage to GPA?

Look up the letter grade for the percentage on your school's scale, then the grade points for that letter. On the common scale used here, 85% is a B (3.0) and 91% is an A− (3.7).

What GPA is 90 percent?

On the common plus/minus scale 90% is an A− (3.7). On schools that start an A at 90%, it is a 4.0.

What GPA is 80 percent?

On the common scale 80% is a B− (2.7). Without plus/minus grades it is a B (3.0).

Why is my school's conversion different?

Grading scales are set by each school or district. Edit the minimum percentages in the conversion scale to match yours.

Does this include honors or AP weighting?

No, it calculates the unweighted GPA. Use the main GPA calculator for weighted GPA.
