Letter and percent grade to GPA (4.0 scale)
Most US high schools and colleges report GPA on a 4.0 scale: each letter grade maps to grade points, and GPA is the average of those points. The table below is the common plus/minus scale this site's calculator uses. Some schools give A+ 4.3, use 10-point bands (90–100 = A) or skip D-; check your handbook.
| Letter | Percent | GPA points |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 97–100% | 4.0 |
| A | 93–96% | 4.0 |
| A- | 90–92% | 3.7 |
| B+ | 87–89% | 3.3 |
| B | 83–86% | 3.0 |
| B- | 80–82% | 2.7 |
| C+ | 77–79% | 2.3 |
| C | 73–76% | 2.0 |
| C- | 70–72% | 1.7 |
| D+ | 67–69% | 1.3 |
| D | 65–66% | 1.0 |
| D- | — | 0.7 |
| F | 0–64% | 0.0 |
D- has no percent band in this scale (65–66% maps to D, below 65% to F).
How to convert
- Turn each percent into a letter using the bands above.
- Turn each letter into points.
- Average the points, weighting by credits if classes differ in credits.
Example: 95% (A, 4.0), 88% (B+, 3.3) and 81% (B-, 2.7) in equal-credit classes give (4.0+3.3+2.7)/3 = 3.33.
